PSD alerts Prosecutor General's Office to former PM Orban's alleged 'abusive decision' aiding Micula brothers
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has filed a complaint with the Prosecutor General's Office over what it calls a series of 'abusive' decisions by former Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, whom the party accuses of exerting 'illegal pressure' in December 2019 on government officials to execute an unlawful payment of 912.5 million RON to the Micula brothers.
'PSD has notified the Prosecutor General's Office regarding one of the biggest financial grabs in Romania's history, produced and perpetuated by top Liberal officials in government in favor of Ioan and Viorel Micula, publicly known as 'traditional sponsors' of the National Liberal Party. The notification concerns the abusive decisions of former Prime Minister Ludovic Orban and the illegal pressure he exerted in December 2019 on government officials to carry out an illegal payment of 912,500,000 RON to the Micula brothers. It must be emphasized that this payment was ordered by the former prime minister 'in full knowledge of the risks of incompatibility with EU law',' the PSD said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the party, the 'huge damage caused by Ludovic Orban' and the 'passivity' of the current dismissed prime minister, Ilie Bolojan, in defending the state's interests in the case amount to 'an unprecedented attack on public money aimed at favoring party friends'.
'Those who invoked the need for reform to justify higher taxes and duties now prove to be the authors or accomplices of the greatest robbery of taxpayers' money, carried out through government decisions and pressure. This 'clear, direct and particularly serious damage to the budget' cannot remain without consequences in a state governed by the rule of law. PSD notes that the EU General Court has issued a final ruling according to which the amounts paid by the government to the Micula brothers - contrary to the objections of Finance Ministry officials - constitute state aid incompatible with EU law. The so-called pro-Europeans trampled European values and principles to satisfy long-standing 'financial friends' of the National Liberal Party. The PSD also points out that the damage in the 'Micula case' is comparable to the major loss caused by former USR ministers through the oversized procurement of anti-COVID vaccines, which is currently under investigation,' the statement adds.
