German authorities on Thursday confirmed the death of one of the Romanian citizens trapped under the rubble following the collapse of a building in the town of Goerlitz, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said, adding that representatives of the Romanian Embassy in Berlin are in contact with the deceased person's family.

'Further to previous press clarifications regarding the incident that occurred on May 18, 2026, in the town of Goerlitz, Federal Republic of Germany, following which two Romanian citizens were reported missing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) states that today, May 21, 2026, German authorities confirmed the death of one of the Romanian citizens,' the ministry said in a press release sent to AGERPRES.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.

Representatives of the Romanian Embassy in Berlin are in contact with the deceased person's family and are ready to provide specific consular assistance.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing.

Additional information regarding this case will be provided by the authorities as it becomes available.

Rescue teams recovered the body of a 25-year-old Romanian tourist from the rubble of an apartment building that collapsed in eastern Germany, police told dpa on Thursday morning.

The search for two other missing persons is continuing, a police spokeswoman said.

The multi-storey building in the town of Goerlitz, near the border with Poland in the eastern state of Saxony, collapsed on Monday evening for reasons that remain unclear.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that Romanian citizens in Germany may request consular assistance through the telephone numbers of Romania's diplomatic mission and consular offices in the Federal Republic of Germany, depending on the consular district, with calls being redirected to the Contact and Support Centre for Romanian Citizens Abroad and handled permanently by Call Centre operators.

Romanian citizens facing a difficult, special or emergency situation also have access to dedicated emergency telephone numbers, depending on the consular district. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Isabela Paulescu; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
