Tennis player Elina Svitolina to join Simona Halep at Sports Festival in Cluj-Napoca
Elina Svitolina, one of the tennis players alongside whom Simona Halep has played some of the most important matches of her career, will be present at the Sports Festival, which will take place in June in Cluj-Napoca.
'The Ukrainian will attend the official event dedicated to the career of the former world number one. The two will meet on court again on 13 June 2026 at BTarena. The atmosphere will be warmed by Andrew Krasny, one of the most recognisable voices in world tennis. He will be one of the hosts of the show-event dedicated to Simona Halep. Known for his role as host at some of the most important tournaments on the WTA and ATP circuits, he stated that he would not miss this event for anything in the world,' the Sports Festival organisers said in a release sent on Thursday.
According to the quoted source, Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep have built one of the most balanced rivalries of their generation, meeting at numerous major WTA tournaments as well as at the Billie Jean King Cup (Fed Cup). Their matches have often carried high stakes, the most notable being the Wimbledon 2019 semifinal, won by Halep on her way to the Grand Slam title. Svitolina, meanwhile, secured an important victory in the third round of the 2021 US Open.
Elina Svitolina said that she is very happy to be coming to Cluj-Napoca for the Sports Festival to celebrate Simona Halep's incredible career, adding that stepping onto the same court together again will be a special moment.
Svitolina is one of the most prominent players in women's tennis over the past decade. A former world number three, the Ukrainian has won 19 WTA titles and achieved notable results at the highest level, including winning the WTA Finals in 2018, two Grand Slam semifinals (Wimbledon and US Open 2019), and the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics - the first in Ukrainian tennis history. After taking a break in 2022, Svitolina returned strongly to the circuit. In 2026, she has already won a title and became the first player on the tour to surpass 20 wins in a season.
The 7th edition of the Sports Festival will take place between 11 and 14 June 2026 and will feature, as every year, dozens of sports activities, competitions, demonstrations, international guests, inspirational talks and free access to most events. Following a 2025 edition which attracted over 150,000 participants and featured a headline gala match with Ronaldinho, the Cluj-Napoca festival continues to cement its status as a landmark event in Europe celebrating grassroots sport and the joy of movement.
