Constantin Popovici crowned best men's high-diver of 2025 at European Aquatics Athlete of the Year Awards
Romanian Constantin Popovici has been voted the best men's high-diving athlete at the 2025 European Aquatics Athlete of the Year Awards, following a public vote that recognised his sustained excellence across one of the most demanding and competitive seasons in recent years.
Popovici secured 35.06% of the votes, capping a season in which he consistently performed at the highest level. He won bronze at the World Championships in Singapore, recovering from an unsuccessful start with a series of high-calibre dives that brought him onto the podium.
The 37-year-old then took second place at the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup stage in Porto Flavia.
Throughout the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, Popovici remained a constant contender for the podium and stayed in the title race until the final event, ultimately finishing second overall.
Spain's Carlos Gimeno placed second in the vote with 20.11%, after a season that saw him win silver at the World Championships, reach the World Cup podium, and finish third overall in the Cliff Diving World Series, with standout victories in the Philippines and Italy.
Italian diver Andrea Barnaba completed the top three with 19.72%, following a sixth-place finish at the World Championships in Singapore and a series of strong performances in the Cliff Diving World Series.
French veteran Gary Hunt ranked fourth with 14.71%, after tying for sixth at the World Championships and winning the overall Cliff Diving World Series title.
Rounding out the five-man shortlist was another Romanian, Catalin Preda, who received 10.33% of the votes. He placed fifth at the World Championships and delivered solid performances in both the World Cup and the Cliff Diving World Series, despite a shortened season due to medical issues.
