Hundreds of traditional Transylvanian dishes at Taste of Transylvania festival in Gilau
The Rakoczi-Banffy Castle will host a culinary festival between 29 and 31 May, featuring several hundred traditional Transylvanian dishes, dozens of restaurants, Michelin-starred chefs and local producers.
'We will host a Taste of Transylvania event at the castle in Gilau, where we have invited 21 restaurants, including Michelin-starred venues, Michelin-recommended restaurants and some of the top restaurants in Romania, from Bucharest, Brasov, Sibiu, the Harghita area and Cluj. Over three days, we are organising a weekend dedicated to gastronomy and we are looking forward to welcoming the foodie community from Cluj. We will also have local producers. Through their products, we can showcase Transylvanian cuisine and cook using their ingredients. Restaurants will prepare special dishes for that weekend and we will launch a festival menu of up to 100 items,' said Trucza Adorjan, the main organiser of the Taste of Transylvania festival, at a press conference on Wednesday.
He added that there will also be special guests, including one chef from Portugal with a Michelin star and two guests from Hungary, one with a Michelin star and another with a Michelin recommendation.
Among the special dishes, Trucza Adorjan mentioned veal sweetbreads with a distinctive sauce, prepared by a Michelin-starred restaurant from Budapest.
At the same press conference, Kovacs Ferenc, administrator of the castle, said the culinary event fits into his broader vision for the site's role.
'From the very beginning, we wanted to turn this castle into a cultural centre. I believe we have laid out a blank canvas and invited everyone to contribute. So far, the Cluj State Philharmonic has accepted our invitation and we have a long-term framework agreement, with two very successful concerts already held. We have signed a similar agreement with the Romanian Theatre and Opera in Cluj and are set to sign one with the University of Art and Design. Along the same lines, and wanting to host a gastronomic weekend, we invited the very enthusiastic and hardworking team behind Taste of Transylvania to bring this culinary moment into the life of the castle. This is how we are trying to fill the castle with life,' said Kovacs Ferenc.
He added that the festival is a good opportunity to promote Transylvanian gastronomy.
'In my view, it is currently the most appealing festival of this kind in our country. Its purpose is very close to my heart, as it aims to promote Transylvanian cuisine.
