Navodari Lock modernisation project worth 495M lei to boost navigation safety on Poarta Alba-Midia Canal
The ongoing modernisation of the Navodari Lock, a project financed with more than 495 million lei in European funds, will ensure the availability and increased safety of navigation on the Poarta Alba-Midia Navodari Canal, representatives of the National Company Administration of Navigable Canals (ACN) and the construction team said on Wednesday in Constanta.
According to ACN Director Florian Goidea, the investment will ensure smooth navigation through the Navodari Lock for the next 30 years.
'This project, a major one both for ACN and the Ministry of Transport, given its value of 495 million lei, involves the modernisation of the two lock chambers at Navodari. This is necessary because an increase in freight traffic through Midia Port is expected, making this section increasingly important. It is also the only lock that had not yet been modernised, while the other three locks were upgraded between 2013 and 2019. Through this modernisation, very good navigation conditions will be ensured for the next 30 years,' Goidea said at a press conference.
Contractor representative Iulian Florea said the first phase of the works is due to be completed in November 2026.
Project monitoring officer Adina Hilca provided further details about the EU-funded project 'Modernisation of the Năvodari Lock to Increase Navigation Safety'.
'It is a project financed through non-repayable European funds under the 2021-2027 programme. The financing contract was signed in December 2025. The total project value is 495.9 million lei, of which 208.9 million lei is provided by the European Union through the Cohesion Fund, while the remainder will come from the state budget via the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure,' Hilca said.
She added that the design and execution contract was awarded in April 2024 and the supervision contract in January 2025, with works being carried out in stages to avoid disrupting lock traffic.
The project's general objective is to ensure the availability and safety of navigation on the Poarta Alba-Midia Navodari Canal through the Navodari Lock, providing a sustainable alternative to road transport along a major national and international transport route.
The specific objective is the rehabilitation and modernisation of the lock's core technological equipment, auxiliary equipment, structural components, navigation safety systems and pollution prevention installations. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Nona Jalba; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
