MAE: Romania takes over SEECP Chairmanship-in-Office
Romania is set to take over, for one year, the Chairmanship-in-Office of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) at the Summit of the format held in Sofia, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) has announced.
According to the MAE, Romania's mandate at the SEECP Chairmanship will have three priorities: supporting the EU enlargement process and the gradual integration of participants into the European Single Market, as well as promoting the region's voice within European institutions; strengthening resilience against hybrid and cyber threats, disinformation, as well as natural disasters and medical emergencies; sustainable economic development through energy, transport and digital connectivity, the implementation of the SEE 2030 Strategy and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, with a special emphasis on youth and civil society.
Interim Foreign Affairs Minister Oana Toiu will attend the SEECP meeting in the Bulgarian capital on behalf of President Nicusor Dan.
The event marks 30 years since the format was established and the conclusion of Bulgaria's Chairmanship.
Within the meeting, Romania will officially take over the rotating chairmanship of the SEECP for the period 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.
'Romania will represent this year the common objectives of the region under the umbrella of the chairmanship we are taking over today in Sofia at the meeting of leaders from South-East Europe. The overlap of the chairmanship year with the period of negotiations for the future multiannual EU budget will allow us an increased focus on strategic projects for connecting the EU to the region, with Romania a direct beneficiary of these projects. Better connectivity of roads, railways, border crossing points, commercial markets and border communities opens up opportunities for economic growth for the region, and Romania, as a partner for the countries in the region on the path of adapting to European standards, strengthens our country's active role in the architecture of decisions concerning the future of the EU,' Oana Toiu conveyed.
According to her, after 30 years, the transformation of the region is at a 'key moment,' from a region perceived as unstable to one with 'visible' growth potential and investment projects attractive to global partners.
The SEECP is a regional format founded in 1996 at the initiative of Bulgaria, being the only cooperation forum in South-East Europe created and managed by participants from the region.
