INS: Natural increase of Romania's population remains negative in April
Romania's population recorded a negative natural increase in April 2026 (-8,758), with the number of registered deaths being 1.8 times higher than that of live births, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Wednesday.
According to official statistics, birth certificates were issued for 10,655 children in April 2026, down by 27 (-0.3%) compared with March 2026.
The number of death certificates registered in the same month stood at 19,413 (10,023 for males and 9,390 for females), down by 1,353 deaths compared with March 2026, a decrease of 6.5% (-6.4% for males and -6.7% for females). The number of death certificates registered for children under one year old in April 2026 was 61, up by 2 compared with March 2026.
In April 2026, 42% (8,154 deaths) of the total number of deaths were recorded among people aged 80 and over, 28% (5,428 deaths) among those aged 70-79 and 16% (3,098 deaths) among those aged 60-69. At the other end of the scale, the fewest deaths were recorded in the 0-4 age group (81 deaths), 5-19 (45 deaths) and 20-29 (84 deaths).
At civil registry offices, 6,693 marriages were registered, while the number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by mutual consent of the spouses (through administrative or notarial procedures) stood at 2,194.
Compared with the same period of the previous year, the number of birth certificates for live births registered in April 2026 was 726 lower (-6.4%) compared with the same month in 2025.
On the other hand, the number of death certificates registered in April 2026 increased by 87 (+0.5%) compared with April 2025, while the number of death certificates for children under one year old was four higher in April 2026 than in the same month of 2025.
Natural increase remained negative in both April 2026 (-8,758 people) and April 2025 (-7,945 people).
In April 2026, 9,706 deaths were recorded in urban areas (4,961 males and 4,745 females), while 9,707 deaths were recorded in rural areas (5,062 males and 4,645 females). Compared with the same month in 2025, the number of deaths increased by 1.8% in urban areas (+0.4% among males and +3.4% among females) and decreased by 0.9% in rural areas (-0.7% among males and -1.1% among females).
