The Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) cannot promise a vote for the installation of a Government that is still being formed and is awaiting, ahead of future talks, the final list of ministers and the governing programme, party leader Kelemen Hunor said after consultations with Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac.

'At this moment I can promise one thing - we will not vote against a Government, but we cannot promise today that we will vote for a Government. At this moment, a Government without a transparent, fair and coherent majority has no chance to do things properly to take Romania in the desired direction, we are talking about the PNRR [the National Recovery and Resilience Plan], we are talking about SAFE [the Security Action for Europe], we are talking about the budget for next year,' the UDMR leader said.

He added that he did not get the impression that Eugen Tomac wanted 'extravagant things' in terms of the governing programme.

'I did not feel that he wants extravagant or new things, but without a majority it is unlikely that you can get things done,' Kelemen Hunor explained.

According to him, a new round of consultations will take place after the governing programme is finalised.

'We will have another discussion with Mr Tomac, we will read the governing programme, because we need to take a decision based on its content,' the UDMR leader conveyed.

He said that the discussions also covered a series of political matters.

'At this moment, from the point of view of political logic, it is almost impossible for us to vote for a Government, after being removed from a Government through a motion of censure, and the next day to vote for a Government we are not part of. It does not make sense in any way, we need arguments for such a vote because we are not political masochists. So far, we do not have sufficient arguments to vote for a Government we are not part of, after we were censured through the motion of censure by the PSD [the Social Democratic Party] and the AUR [Alliance for the Unity of Romanians],' Kelemen Hunor underscored.

In his view, a politician should lead a political Government. 'The second matter is also political in nature, a politician leading a technocratic Government. A politician should lead a political Government, with committed political actors and assumed responsibility from political parties, because otherwise governance cannot work,' he said.

He also raised the issue of a lack of trust in political parties through the proposal of a technocratic Government.

'If you come with a technocratic Government it means that you do not trust political parties, in any political party, in politicians and you want to use Parliament only to justify the appointment of a Government that has no direct link to political parties,' Kelemen Hunor pointed out.

The issues discussed with Eugen Tomac will be presented to the UDMR parliamentary groups and to the party's leadership bodies before a decision is taken.

'Today we cannot promise a vote for the installation of this Government that is still being formed. The list is not yet complete, there are still a few portfolios, if I understood correctly, where no minister has been designated. We are waiting to see the full list, we are waiting to see the governing programme and, of course, we are trying to find arguments to resolve these political issues, we have not yet found arguments to resolve these political matters,' Kelemen Hunor underscored.
