UPDATE Galati drone incident/President Nicusor Dan visited at hospital the two wounded
President Nicusor Dan is in Galati on Friday afternoon where he visited the child and the woman who were wounded after the military drone fell on a block of the city.
'It's a gesture of empathy. They are both very well. They are people with some wounds, but they are not serious at all. They will stay for a week or two and they will be completely... They are very well [mentally], because the mother is an adult, the child is under 18, the child is here, the mother is in the County Hospital, they talk to each other on the phone and they are optimistic', Nicusor Dan said at the 'Sf. Ioan' Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital.
He specified that, after they are discharged, until the apartments in the block are repaired, the two people will live in a house that the city hall has already identified.
Asked who will bear these expenses, the president replied: 'There was already a decision by the CNSU - the National Committee for Emergency Situations. Some financial aid was arranged there for the affected homes and from there I don't know [the amounts], but it will be as much as the state can bear'.
According to the head of state, it was an extraordinary event and 'the authorities reacted well'.
'We must, as I said at the press statement earlier, continue to improve military equipment and very soon we will be fine', the president added.
He referred to the conditions that must be taken into account when shooting down drones.
'This is a complicated technical discussion, because, depending on the equipment, if you try to shoot down the drone from the plane, you have to be sure that the trajectory of the missile that shoots down the drone does not reach a house and cause greater damage. So, angles, as not to shoot from Romanian territory to Ukrainian territory, so there are many conditions,' Nicusor Dan emphasized.
Nicusor Dan said that the trajectory of the drone is known.
'There was a group of 43 drones that came from the eastern side, crossed Ukraine at, let's say, 20-30 km, so east-west, 20-30 km from the north of the Danube, from east to west. As they crossed Ukrainian territory, some of them were shot down and one of them was hit, probably above the city of Reni, its trajectory changed and came towards Galati. It was hit kinetically', explained the president.
He pointed out, regarding the fact that people seem to no longer take RO-ALERT messages into account, that 'nothing is perfect, but it is a signal, a correct investment by the state'.
'For each of the areas where they are staying, there are some instructions that they must receive from the County Emergency Committee,' the head of state added, noting that he will also visit the affected block.
On Friday, the Ministry of Health announced that the two people wounded in Galati are stable. It is about a 53-year-old woman, hospitalized at the Galati County Emergency Clinical Hospital, Plastic Surgery department, and who has first and second degree burns on her legs, with retention of a foreign body (glass), and a 14-year-old boy, hospitalized at the 'Sf. Ioan' Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital in Galati, Surgery department, with burns on her forearms, without respiratory problems.
During the morning, the head of state convened the Supreme Council of National Defense. At the end of the meeting, he announced the declaration of the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Constanta as persona non grata and the closure of the Consulate.
'Last night, we had a serious incident in which two Romanian citizens were injured and the entire responsibility for this incident lies with Russia, a country that has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for more than four years. In view of this situation, the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Constanta has been declared persona non grata and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Constanta will be closed,' said President Nicusor Dan.
