Prince Radu of Romania to host Cantemir Award ceremony at Elisabeta Palace
Prince of Romania will host an evening at Elisabeta Palace on Friday dedicated to the ninth Royal Colloquium, held in Bucharest, and the presentation of the 13th Cantemir Award.
The 13th Cantemir Award, an annual distinction presented as part of the Royal Colloquia, will be conferred on Professor Emeritus Antoon De Baets of the University of Groningen, the Romanian Royal House announced.
The awards, which honour the memory and spirit of the enlightened princes Dimitrie Cantemir and Antioh Cantemir, were presented at the University of Oxford between 2010 and 2012 for books addressing the themes of the annual conferences that marked the launch of the Cantemir Project there. Since 2017, they have been presented in Sinaia and Bucharest in recognition of the recipients' lifetime achievements.
This year's Royal Colloquium, entitled 'Attacks on History and the Student Press in Romania', takes place on Friday at the Filipescu-Cesianu House in Bucharest.
The Royal Colloquium and the Cantemir Award are held under the High Patronage of Prince Radu of Romania.
The Royal Colloquia, which honour the memory and spirit of the enlightened princes Dimitrie Cantemir and Antioh Cantemir, were initiated by Sorin Antohi in 2017, continuing a tradition of gatherings held under the auspices of the Romanian Royal Family, including conferences and colloquia organised in Sinaia, Oxford, Iasi and Bucharest. In 2018, the Royal Colloquia received the High Patronage of His Royal Highness Radu, Prince Consort.
The Cantemir Annual Award continues the tradition of the Cantemir Prize, presented between 2010 and 2012 as part of the activities that led to the establishment of a Cantemir Institute at the University of Oxford (2011-2013).
The distinctions have so far been awarded to the following scholars, initially for books published in the preceding year: I. Stefan Lemny (National Library of France) - 2010; II. Alison Ashford (University of Sydney) and Philippa Levine (University of Texas at Austin) - 2011; III. Martin Dodge and Chris Perkins (both from the University of Manchester) and Rob Kitchin (National University of Ireland, Maynooth) - 2012.
