BrancusiYear/ 'The Wide Awake Muses' exhibition to be varnished on Friday in Targu Jiu
The opening of the exhibition 'The Wide Awake Muses'/'Muzele treze', part of a series of cultural events dedicated to the 'Constantin Brancusi Year', will take place on Friday at the 'Constantin Brancusi' National Museum in Targu Jiu.
The exhibition belongs to Hungarian artist of Romanian origin Eva Andrea Szocs, associate professor and head of department at the Visual Arts Department of the Rippl-Ronai Art Institute within MATE University in Budapest.
It is an artistic installation comprising approximately 25 ceramic heads - muses - arranged on white cushions, directly referencing Constantin Brancusi, with explicit reference to his series Sleeping Muses (1909-1910; 1917-1920).
'The ‘Constantin Brancusi' National Museum in Targu Jiu continues a broad programme of events it has proposed to mark the ‘Constantin Brancusi Year' with an exhibition of ceramic art. This is a solo exhibition by Hungarian artist of Romanian origin Eva Andrea Szocs (...), and this artistic installation references Brancusi's Sleeping Muses series. Andrea Szocs has entitled her exhibition The Wide Awake Muses, and this cultural programme is part of a series of events aimed at highlighting Brancusi's legacy, bringing cultural values closer to the general public, and encouraging research. (...) It is an event in which the artist has conceived this series as a reversal of Brancusi's Sleeping Muses. It is about two states, sleep and awakening; Szocs's muses are in a state of wakefulness with their eyes open, in contrast to Brancusi's muses, which are asleep. Szocs's muses are dreamlike but also conscious at the same time, and they look at the real world with a certain lucidity,' curator Ana Negoita, PhD lecturer at the Centre of Excellence in Image Study, stated regarding the installation, according to museum manager Denisa Suta, in comments to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
The exhibition project 'The Wide Awake Muses'/'Muzele treze' is carried out within the institutional partnership between the 'Constantin Brancusi' National Museum and the Centre of Excellence in Image Study at the University of Bucharest.
The opening will take place on Friday, and the exhibition will be open to visitors until May 12. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Popescu; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
