Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Defence, Public Order and National Security in the Chamber of Deputies Andrei Baciu met last week at the United Nations headquarters with UN Under-Secretary-General Amandeep Singh Gill, the two discussing the new reality generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

'Artificial intelligence is no longer an experiment in Silicon Valley laboratories, nor just a chatbot used for quick replies to emails. It is the invisible infrastructure that is beginning to shape every major system of society,' Baciu told AGERPRES on Wednesday.

He underlined that AI is already reshaping some of the world's most important mechanisms:

* the labour market - algorithms decide who enters a recruitment process and are profoundly transforming entire professions;
* corporations - business models are changing faster than boards can adapt;
* governments - which must regulate technologies they are only beginning to understand;
* financial markets - where AI assesses risk, sets credit terms and moves capital faster than any human;
* democracies - because artificial intelligence already influences how we inform ourselves, think and, sometimes, vote.

In the MP's view, AI is not only changing technology, but also the architecture of power in society.

'If until now generations were defined by the decade in which we were born, the emergence of AI forces us to 'zoom out'. All of us living today are part of the first transition generation: the one moving from a pre-AI era to a post-AI era. This transition comes with enormous responsibility,' Andrei Baciu said.

He believes that it is the responsibility of all leaders, whether formal or informal, in both the public and private sectors, to guide this transformation so that AI is used ethically, responsibly and for the benefit of people.

'The governance of artificial intelligence is becoming a global priority. Those who write the rules of AI today are in fact defining the architecture of power for tomorrow. The United Nations has launched the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, mandated by General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/325. In addition, a panel of 40 independent experts, selected from over 2,600 candidates worldwide, is working on the first global report on AI, which will be published in the coming months. It is one of the most important current conversations about the future of technology,' Baciu added.

He mentioned that he has proposed the establishment of a Committee for Artificial Intelligence in Romania's Parliament, a step he deems necessary to build a legislative and strategic framework adapted to the new technological reality.

'It is time for Romania to take concrete action in this regard. I am therefore initiating debates in Romania's Parliament on the essential issues for our society, so that it can keep pace with technological progress and the evolution of global AI governance. I believe Romania must be an active participant in these transformations, not merely a spectator. Through dialogue, expertise and collaboration we can build public policies that keep up with the accelerated changes in the world we live in. Because the rules of AI will not only define technology.
