President Nicusor Dan met on Friday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace with the European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, during which he reaffirmed Romania's firm commitment to implementing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

'I had an important discussion today at the Cotroceni Palace with Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms. We addressed the major challenges facing Europe, particularly the urgent need to safeguard stability and stimulate prosperity across the European Union. We focused on key themes such as strengthening unity among member states, ongoing reforms and the future EU budget,' Nicusor Dan wrote on Facebook.

During the meeting, the head of state highlighted the essential role of the Cohesion Policy within the broader framework of EU policies.

'I underlined that the EU's cohesion programmes have consistently supported Romania's convergence and sustainable growth. In this regard, I stressed the need for effective solutions for the Cohesion Policy, including in the context of the next Multiannual Financial Framework. I also reaffirmed that advancing convergence remains an important objective for us and a foundation for strengthening the European Union's competitiveness, and I emphasised the importance of ensuring broad and fair access for companies to the EU's competitiveness instruments,' the president said.

Achieving the right balance between performance-based and geographical criteria is essential to encourage inclusive growth and prevent widening disparities within the Union, Nicusor Dan argued.

'With regard to the EU budget for 2028-2034, I advocated for an ambitious, efficient and flexible framework designed to advance the Union's long-term objectives and respond effectively to emerging challenges. Throughout this process, convergence must remain our central goal. I conveyed to Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto our appreciation for the continued attention paid to the specific needs of the EU's eastern border region, emphasised the importance of tailored solutions for this area, and highlighted the role of security investments as a complementary component of competitiveness. I also reaffirmed Romania's firm commitment to implementing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and reiterated our focus on fiscal discipline, sustainable growth and strategic investment,' the head of state stated.
