ANAF's Nica: Institution is facing a real challenge: at Schengen borders, it struggles to collect information
The National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) is facing a real challenge with Romania's entry into the Schengen Area, as it struggles to collect information at Schengen borders and is working on a system of cameras and scales, ANAF President Adrian Nica said on Tuesday at the official launch of the International Fiscal Association - IFA Romania.
'Be aware that with the entry into Schengen, perhaps this has never been said before, the ANAF has been and is facing a real challenge: at Schengen borders it cannot collect information effectively and is working on a system of cameras and scales, because tax evasion will find a way. In this process of globalisation, an important role for the ANAF is the exchange of information with other member states. With the opening of this electronic information exchange, we have access to the payments of any taxpayer,' Nica said.
The ANAF chief underlined that the main challenge for the ANAF structures is related to e-commerce.
Regarding the agency's digitalisation process, Adrian Nica described it as 'quite delicate,' especially given that the average age of staff is around 54.
Moreover, the agency will develop AI for its control structures in the near future, aimed at standardising decision-making. Nica emphasised that the ANAF's AI will not do the work of someone who does not know how to do it and that training sessions are currently underway with employees to help them understand the tool's role and how to use it.
The official launch of the IFA Romania took place on Tuesday, attended by representatives of public authorities, tax experts, entrepreneurs, economists, consultants and business leaders.
