ANM issues Code Red for extreme heat in 16 counties on Sunday and Monday

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued on Friday a Code Red warning for heat, valid on Sunday and Monday, for 16 counties, as well as Codes Orange and Yellow covering more than three quarters of the country.

According to meteorologists, between 28 June at 10:00 and 29 June at 10:00, a Code Red of unusually hot weather will be in force in Crisana, Maramures, Transylvania and northern Moldavia, where extreme maximum temperatures will be recorded, comparable to June absolute records. Thermal discomfort will also be particularly high, with the temperature-humidity index (THI) exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units.

Maximum temperatures will range between 35 and 38 degrees, higher in Maramures, Crisana and north-western Transylvania, reaching 39 to 40 degrees. Nights will be tropical, with minimum temperatures generally between 17 and 25 degrees.

The counties under Code Red are Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, Salaj, Cluj, Alba, Hunedoara, Maramures, Bistrita-Nasaud, Mures, Sibiu, Harghita, Covasna, Brasov, Suceava and Botosani.

According to the specialist forecast, until Monday morning there will also be a Code Orange warning for heat and high thermal discomfort in areas of Banat, Oltenia, most of Muntenia and Moldavia. The THI will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units, and maximum temperatures will range between 34 and 38 degrees, with the highest values in Banat. At the same time, nights will be tropical, with minimum temperatures generally between 17 and 22 degrees.

Moreover, from Sunday morning until Monday at 10:00, a Code Yellow warning for hot weather will be in effect in Dobrogea and south-eastern Muntenia, where unusually high temperatures for this period will be recorded, with maximum values between 30 and 34 degrees, increased thermal discomfort, and the THI reaching the critical threshold of 80 units.
