UBB inaugurates Romania's first high-throughput in vitro screening platform for drug development
The Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca announced it has inaugurated Romania's first automated high-throughput in vitro screening platform for drug development.
'The Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca inaugurated on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the High-throughput in vitro screenings for drug development platform, the first automated infrastructure of its kind in Romania. The inauguration took place within the 5th edition of the 'Perspectives and opportunities at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering' workshop, an event dedicated to presenting the faculty's development directions and strengthening excellence in research in chemistry and biomedical applications,' the UBB said in a release issued on Friday.
According to the quoted source, the new platform marks a milestone for Romania's national research infrastructure, being the country's first automated high-throughput in vitro screening laboratory dedicated to drug development.
The platform supports the development of medicinal chemistry and new chemical and biochemical technologies with biomedical applications, enabling researchers to rapidly and efficiently assess collections of compounds developed in the faculty's and the university's research laboratories by investigating their interaction with relevant biomolecular targets.
It also facilitates scientific collaborations and research services for partners in academia and the pharmaceutical industry, both nationally and internationally.
Through the infrastructure and expertise it provides, the platform will help accelerate the discovery and validation of new molecules with therapeutic potential and enhance the competitiveness of Romanian research in this area.
'This initiative is part of the UBB's strategic development in the biomedical and health area through the UBBMed structure and the new Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, an area which, in a comprehensive university such as the UBB, has the best chance in Romania of benefiting from the most advanced scientific infrastructure, in this case in clinical chemistry,' according to the UBB Rector, Professor Daniel David, Phd.
According to the release, by inaugurating this research infrastructure, the UBB is strengthening its advanced research ecosystem and reaffirming its commitment to investing in high-performance scientific infrastructure capable of supporting innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and the transfer of research results to society and the economy.
