The photographic exhibition 'La RoumanIE d'Adolphe A. Chevallier' was inaugurated on June 25 at the Luxembourg headquarters of the Court of Justice of the European Union - a project dedicated to rediscovering early 20th century Romania through the lens of Royal Court of Romania photographer Adolphe Auguste Chevallier, the Embassy of Romania in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg announced on Thursday in a press release.

The event brought together representatives of European institutions, the diplomatic and cultural community, as well as members of the Romanian community in Luxembourg. The exhibition is organised with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Brussels, the Neamt County Council and the Neamt National Museum Complex, and presents to the European public images of exceptional documentary and artistic value, illustrating traditions, the Romanian village and Romania's cultural identity at the beginning of the previous century.

The exhibition opened in a context with strong symbolic significance, shortly after Ia Day (June 24) - a celebration dedicated to one of the most representative expressions of Romanian cultural heritage, included in 2022 on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Alongside Romania's ambassador to Luxembourg, Livia Rusu, the following delivered remarks at the opening: the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Koen Lenaerts; the Romanian judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union, Octavia Spineanu; and Dr. Mihaela Verzea, the exhibition's curator and deputy director of the Neamt National Museum Complex.

In her remarks, the Romanian ambassador highlighted the cultural and European dimension of the project: 'Presenting this exhibition at the Court of Justice of the European Union carries a special significance. The European Union is founded on the principle of unity in diversity, and cultural heritage plays an essential role in promoting mutual understanding among nations. Through these images, we aim to offer not only an insight into Romania's past, but also a deeper appreciation of the richness of Romanian culture, which forms part of our shared European heritage'.

The exhibition takes place under the auspices of the Romanian Royal Family, given the historical connection between Adolphe Auguste Chevallier and the Royal Court, where he served as official photographer.

The event also included the inauguration of the 'Yolanda Eminescu' Hall of the Court of Justice of the European Union, dedicated to the memory of the distinguished Romanian jurist and her contribution to European legal thought.

Through this project, which will be on display until July 7, 2026, the organisers aim to bring to the attention of the European public an important chapter of Romania's visual and cultural heritage, highlighting the role of photographic art as an instrument of memory, dialogue and cultural diplomacy.
