ForMin Toiu, Norwegian counterpart discuss positive momentum of economic cooperation
Economic cooperation between Romania and Norway, investment in Romania, as well as security and defence matters were among the topics discussed on Wednesday by Foreign Minister Oana Toiu during a meeting with her Norwegian counterpart Espen Barth Eide, who is in Bucharest for the Bucharest 9 (B9) Format and Nordic Countries Summit.
According to a press release the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES, the discussions between the two officials reconfirmed the excellent stage of bilateral relations between Romania and Norway, as well as the positive momentum of economic cooperation, with trade exchanges exceeding one billion euros in 2025. The balance was in Romania's favour, at approximately 393 million euros in 2025, supported in particular by a more than 12% increase in Romanian exports.
Oana Toiu highlighted Romania's interest in strengthening its position as an attractive destination for Norwegian companies and underlined Norway's important role as an investor in Romania, particularly in sectors such as the shipbuilding and food industries, the energy transition and digital services.
The quoted source also shows that the Romanian minister highlighted the contribution of the Romanian community in Norway to bringing the two countries closer together, appreciating the very good level of integration enjoyed by the community within Norwegian society.
The two ministers also discussed the development of a project dedicated to modernising consular services offered to Romanian citizens through strengthening the institutional capacity of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the OECD.
They also addressed security and defence matters, reaffirming the strategic nature of bilateral cooperation in the current regional and international context, the ministry said, adding that Oana Toiu expressed appreciation for Norway's substantial contribution to strengthening the security of NATO's eastern flank and the Black Sea region, underlining the importance of allied solidarity and the transatlantic relationship.
Oana Toiu and her counterpart agreed to launch cooperation between Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Archives of Norway for the digitisation, protection and promotion of the heritage of international treaties and Romanian diplomatic archives, a project to be developed within the framework of the 2021-2028 Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
'The development of a cooperation platform with non-governmental organisations on democratic resilience was discussed, including in relation to combating Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI). Work on this component will be carried out with established Norwegian partners from civil society and academia,' the quoted source also shows.
Following the official meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu attended the signing ceremony at the Victoria Governmental Palace, held in the context of Minister Espen Barth Eide's visit to Bucharest, for the Memorandums of Understanding concerning the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms 2021-2028, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.
