Romania's annual inflation rate rises to 10.71% in April

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

The annual inflation rose to 10.71% in April, from 9.87% in March, as services became 13.04% more expensive, non-food goods 12.02% and food products 7.39%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Wednesday.

'The consumer price index in April 2026 compared with March 2026 is 100.84%. The inflation rate since the beginning of the year (April 2026 compared with December 2025) is 3.1%. The annual inflation rate in April 2026 compared with April 2025 is 10.7%. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the past 12 months (May 2025 - April 2026) as compared to the previous 12 months (May 2024 - April 2025) is 9.0%,' the INS release informed.

According to the quoted source, the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) in April 2026 compared with March 2026 stood at 100.73%. The HICP-based annual inflation rate in April 2026 compared with April 2025 was 9.5%. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the past 12 months (May 2025 - April 2026) against the previous 12 months (May 2024 - April 2025), based on the HICP, was 8.0%.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) revised upwards its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 to 3.9%, from a previous estimate of 3.7% and expects inflation to reach to 2.7% by the end of 2027, according to data presented in February by BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu.

BNR Deputy Governor Cosmin Marinescu said on Tuesday that April would bring a fresh inflation surge, to above 10%, affecting consumption which had already weakened since February, with retail sales down 6.8% year-on-year.

'In Romania, despite the economy being in a deficit demand phase, the rise in energy prices pushed inflation above expectations in March to nearly 10%. The main cause was a roughly 13% increase in fuel prices and April will bring a new inflation impulse to above 10%. Inflation is affecting already compressed consumption: as early as February, retail sales were down 6.8% year-on-year. The outlook for the coming months is not encouraging, as oil tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf remains obstructed. If tensions persist, high energy prices could, through second-round effects, force the persistence of 'Hormuz inflation' for several quarters,' Cosmin Marinescu wrote in the article 'Hormuz Inflation - the new challenge to global monetary policy.'
