ROWING: Romania wins gold, silver medals in the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai
Romania won a gold medal in the women's double sculls and a silver medal in the men's double sculls on Thursday, in the first finals held at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai (China).
In the women's double sculls, Simona Radis and Magdalena Rusu won the race by a long way (07:08.52) compared to the next placed teams, France (07:13.31) and the USA (07:13.93).
In the men's, Florin Arteni and Florin Lehaci (06:42.85) were overtaken in the final by New Zealand (06:37.87), with Switzerland coming in on the third position (06:43.84).
In the women's sculls final, Romania (Emanuela-Ioana Ciotau, Alexandra Ungureanu, Andrada-Maria Morosanu, Ioana Madalina Cornea) came in fourth (06:37.38), almost a second and a half behind the bronze medal, obtained by Germany (06:36.00). The race was won by the Netherlands (06:32.92), and the second place was taken by Great Britain (06:34.52).
Alexandru Gherasim, Nicu Chelaru, Cristian Nicoara and Bogdan Horodisteanu came in third in the men's sculls Final B (05:59.69), after China (05:56.99) and Spain (05:57.68), thus placing the Romanians 9th in the overall ranking.
Three other crews qualified for the A Finals on Thursday.
In the men's double sculls, Olympic champions Andrei Cornea and Marian Enache won the first semifinal (06:31.08), by two seconds.
In the women's 8+1 sculls events, Romania (Cristina Druga, Roxana Anghel, Iulia-Liliana Balauca, Maria Lehaci, Ancuta Bodnar, Geanina Dumitrita Juncanariu, Adriana Adam, Amalia Beres and Victoria Petreanu) scored the best time of the series (06:23.65).
In the men's 8+1, Romania (Mihaita Tiganescu, Laurentiu Danciu, Mateus-Simion Cozminciuc, Fabrizio-Alexandru Scripcariu, Bogdan Baitoc, Leontin Nutescu, Constantin Adam, Claudiu Neamtu and Adrian Munteanu) finished 5th, (05:55.41), so it will compete in Final B.
