Bookfest: Catalogue of MNAR exhibition on Romanian traditional dress to be launched on June 6
Bucharest, June 3 /Agerpres/ - The catalogue of the National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR) exhibition 'Romania: Romanian Traditional Dress in Art', second edition, will be launched on 6 June at the Bookfest International Book Fair.
According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the official launch of the catalogue will take place during the 17th edition of the International Book Fair Bookfest. The publication accompanies 'Romania - The Identity Representation of Traditional Dress in Art', second edition, one of the most comprehensive exhibitions dedicated to the image of Romanian traditional costume in visual culture, presented at the National Museum of Art of Romania between November 2025 and March 2026 and curated by Erwin Kessler.
Available in Romanian and English editions, the catalogue documents and complements the exhibition, bringing together artworks, scholarly studies and specialist materials that highlight how Romanian traditional dress has been represented, interpreted and instrumentalised over time through various forms of artistic expression.
The publication constitutes a valuable resource for researchers, artists, collectors and anyone interested in Romania's cultural heritage, the statement said.
Special guests at the launch will be Andreea Tanasescu and Doina Isfanoni. Andreea Tanasescu is known for her international promotion of the Romanian blouse (ie) and for founding La Blouse Roumaine, a community that has significantly increased the visibility of Romania's textile heritage worldwide. Doina Isfanoni, an ethnologist, historian and art theorist, is regarded as one of the leading voices in the study of Romania's traditional cultural heritage.
The exhibition 'Romania: Romanian Traditional Dress in Art' brought together more than 320 artworks and heritage objects from museum and private collections in Romania and abroad, offering an unprecedented perspective on Romanian traditional costume as reflected in art from the 16th century to the present day.
Through painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, installation, film, fashion and other artistic media, the project highlighted the role of the Romanian blouse and traditional costume in shaping Romania's identity narrative, as well as the ways in which these cultural symbols have been integrated into the artistic, social and political discourse of different eras, according to MNAR.
One of the exhibition's highlights was the first-ever presentation in Romania of 'La Blouse Roumaine' by Henri Matisse, on loan from Centre Pompidou. The work has become an international symbol of the fascination exerted by the Romanian blouse on world culture.
The National Museum of Art of Romania is taking part in Bookfest 2026, held from 3 to 7 June at Romexpo's Pavilion B2, with a stand dedicated to visitors interested in art, heritage and museum research.
Visitors will be able to discover and purchase at stand D17 a selection of exhibition catalogues and scholarly repertories produced by museum specialists, documenting works from MNAR's collections as well as research themes relevant to Romanian and European artistic heritage.
