PresidentialElection2025/MApN: Attempted disinformation on TikTok about French soldiers in Cincu - instils distrust in state institutions

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

The Ministry of National Defence (MApN) reports an attempt of disinformation on the TikTok platform regarding the French military in Romania.

According to MApN, on the @19romania89 account, a video with the title ‘French soldiers in Romania in Romanian gendarmerie uniforms' was published on Sunday.

'The author of the post claims, without providing any proof, that the French soldiers stationed in Romania as part of the NATO Battle Group deployed in Cincu would be prepared to act, clandestinely equipped in Romanian Gendarmerie uniforms, to start a civil war in our country, at the end of the electoral process, in the event that a particular candidate is declared the winner,' the ministry detailed.

According to MApN, this information is false and has the potential to create confusion among Romanian citizens.

'The material posted is dangerous disinformation, without any real basis or concrete evidence. It is a clear example of manipulation by spreading conspiracy theories that instil distrust in state institutions, international partners and the democratic process,' the Defence Ministry added.

The NATO troops deployed in Romania have the mission to contribute to the strengthening of the Romanian sector of the allied Eastern Flank and to deter any aggression against the allied territory, given that, beyond the borders with Ukraine, the Russian Federation forces have been engaged for more than three years in an illegal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, the MApN recalled. The allied military presence in Romania is therefore defensive, transparent, legal and known to the public, the ministry added.

'Any attempt to associate the activity of the allied forces on the national territory with the political and electoral context in Romania represents a form of distortion of the truth. We firmly distance ourselves from these irresponsible speculations and condemn attempts to generate panic and distrust in society. We encourage citizens to verify information from official sources and not to let themselves be manipulated by videos taken out of context or statements devoid of any basis,' the MApN said.
