A team of students from Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca won the grand prize at Innovation Labs 2025.

'The CO2 Angels team, made up of students from Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, was awarded the Grand Prize at Innovation Labs 2025 - Demo Day, an event held at the end of May in Bucharest. In the competition final, UBB was represented by two teams - CO2 Angels and HORIZON - each proposing innovative technological solutions developed in response to current challenges in society and industry. CO2 Angels impressed the jury and audience with an innovative agritech solution that uses satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to help farmers make fast and sustainable decisions regarding soil fertilisation. The technology developed by the UBB student team supports soil preservation and increases agricultural yield,' the university informed in a press release on Friday.

According to the source, this revolutionary technology is already being used successfully in Romania and Brazil, demonstrating strong scalability and global relevance.

The CO2 Angels team began its work at CS InnoHub, an innovation and entrepreneurship centre affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The centre's mission is to support UBB students in developing innovative digital solutions to major societal and economic challenges.

The winning team includes: Erik Maidik, David Seu and Calin-Mihai Andrei - students at the UBB Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Miruna Maidik - student at the UBB Faculty of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences and Gabriel-Cristian Cioltea - student at the UBB Faculty of Geography.

The Innovation Labs 2025 programme brought together 80 teams representing 23 universities from across the country, selected following hackathon events held in March in Bucharest, Timisoara, Cluj and Iasi. The teams received intensive mentoring from the competition's partners. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Marius Septimiu Avram; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
