PresidentialElection2025/ AEP dismisses information disseminated in public space questioning correctness of permanent electoral rolls

The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) draws attention that the information disseminated in the public space questioning the correctness of the permanent electoral roll is false and states that no official communication has been received from any political party regarding the existence of specific situations regarding deceased persons who would appear on the rolls drawn up for Sunday's elections.
In a press release sent to AGERPRES, AEP states:
*** Every Romanian citizen who has reached the age of 18 and who has the right to vote is listed in the Electoral Register.
*** Each voter appears in the Electoral Register only once.
*** The data entered in the electoral roll come from several entities of the Romanian state.
*** The data of the citizens who are enrolled or struck off the Electoral Register are provided by the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as follows:
* the entry in the Electoral Register of Romanian citizens who have reached or will reach the age of 18 up to and including election day is made ex officio by the Permanent Electoral Authority, based on the notification of the General Directorate for Persons' Record;
* after acquiring Romanian citizenship, persons who have reached the age of 18 are entered in the Electoral Register, ex officio, by the Permanent Electoral Authority, on the basis of the communication of the General Directorate for Persons' Record;
* The General Directorate of Passports communicates to the Permanent Electoral Authority the data concerning each Romanian voter who has established his domicile abroad, in order to be entered in the Electoral Register;
* It is the responsibility of the mayors or the persons authorised by them to update the data of the citizens enrolled in the Electoral Register. The updating activities include changes of domicile, change of name, establishment of residence, as well as cancellations in case of death, loss of Romanian citizenship, disqualification from the exercise of the right to vote or placing under a ban;
* The registration of voters in the Electoral Register is a constantly evolving process, the data changing from day to day, which is reflected in the monthly communications that the Permanent Electoral Authority publishes on its own website, www.roaep.ro, on the number of voters registered in the Electoral Register;
* AEP provides the number of all Romanian citizens with the right to vote, who hold identity documents issued by the Romanian state, regardless of where they have their permanent residence (in the country or abroad). This number is certain and verifiable at any time, by counting the identity documents issued by the Romanian State. Romanian citizens who have left the country and who keep their identity documents showing their domicile in Romania, remain in the Electoral Register with their domicile address in Romania.
The Permanent Electoral Authority communicated on 13 May the number of valid voters for the election of the President of Romania on May 18.
Thus, the total number of voters registered on the permanent electoral rolls is 17,988,218 citizens; the total number of Romanian citizens residing abroad who are entitled to vote in this election is 1,016,327 persons; there are 6,085 Romanian voters abroad who have opted for postal voting by registering on the website www.votstrainatate.ro and are registered on the permanent electoral rolls abroad for postal voting; there are 2,235 Romanian voters abroad who opted to vote at the polling station by registering on the website www.votstrainatate.ro and are registered on the permanent electoral rolls abroad is ; there are 20,326 citizens who have the right to vote is .
Also, AEP states that the institutional electoral architecture ensures all the conditions for the optimal functioning of the IT systems and applications used in the second round of the presidential elections.
The institutions involved in organising the electoral process in 2025 have taken all measures to ensure free, fair and transparent elections, in accordance with the highest European and international democratic standards, AEP shows.
The Permanent Electoral Authority assures voters that all the operational requirements established by AEP, the Central Electoral Bureau and the National Institute of Statistics have been implemented by the Special Telecommunications Service in order to use secure IT&C systems for the smooth running of the electoral process on May 18.
Data on voter turnout can be visualised in real time on the website of the Permanent Electoral Authority - https://prezenta.roaep.ro, for each polling station. The results recorded in the minutes drawn up by the polling stations' electoral bureaus will be available on the same page, immediately after their finalisation and digital transmission.
The AEP's clarifications come after chairman of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) presidential candidate, George Simion, signalled inconsistencies in the electoral rolls, claiming that they include deceased persons.
