Romania becomes a full member of the World Boxing federation
The Romanian Boxing Federation became a full member of the World Boxing federation, after the Congress in Rome approved its accession, with an unanimity of votes, on Sunday.
The new international federation almost doubled its membership on the said occasion, according to a message posted on the social networks by the the president of the national forum, Vasile Citea.
A number of 49 federations joined the 59 already affiliated members after this meeting in Italy, some of the new members enjoying a great tradition in boxing, including Romania, Cuba, Spain. Turkey, Azerbaijan, China or Georgia. Another 13 federations are expected to join in 2026, while 15 countries, which failed to come up with a complete file, saw their candidacy rejected.
'The Romanian Boxing Federation's record has been impeccable and our affiliation with World Boxing is natural and normal because, in Romania, boxing has the Olympic Games as its ultimate goal. However, we have seen in recent years that attendance at the Olympic Games is not a right, but a privilege for which we must continuously fight, so that the Olympic dreams of our athletes can come true,' said Vasile Citea, president of the Romanian Boxing Federation, who participated in the Rome congress, alongside the federation's secretary general, Daniel Ion.
The Congress in Rome also approved a major revision of the World Boxing statute, as congress members approved 149 amendments to the old statute, with a series of changes to the Technical Regulations to also be put up for a vote at next year's congress, which will take place in Panama. Among the expected changes there are the return to protective helmets in senior competitions, and the rule for resolving disputes with the help of AI (Artificial Intelligence), as Vasile Citea's post also shows.
The former international federation (IBA), chaired by Russian Umar Kremlev since 2020, was officially disqualified by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in June 2023 for failing to take the necessary measures to control its finances and combat corruption, although its recognition had been provisionally withdrawn in 2019.
