Professor John Hattie to receive University of Bucharest honorary doctor's degree

Image

Renowned education and learning expert, Professor John Hattie will be presented on Thursday with the honorary doctor's degree of the Bucharest University, in recognition of his prestigious international scientific activity.

A Professor Emeritus at the University of Melbourne, Australia, John Hattie has written 62 books and numerous articles that serve as foundational texts for educators and decision makers. Visible Learning for Teachers, and Visible Learning into Action are just two of the works that have translated complex research into practical strategies that can be implemented in classrooms.

His book The Politics of Distraction explores how political forces can divert attention from evidence-based practices in education, in further proof of his commitment to ensuring that learning remains at the center of the education policy.

"Professor John Hattie is also noted for his firm commitment to the popularization of research results, every year he gives hundreds of interviews to the media around the world, ensuring that his findings reach not only researchers, but also educators, policy makers and the general public. This involvement also brought him the presentation with the Order of Merit of New Zealand and honorary doctorates from the London Institute of Education - UK, and the University of Augsburg, Germany," a release of the Bucharest University reads.

Professor John Hattie's most influential contribution focuses on the area of understanding feedback in education, says the cited source, noting that his research has demonstrated that feedback is among the most powerful influences on student achievement, a perspective that has changed classroom practices around the world.

"His work has provided a map for improving student achievement, from class sizes to the role of feedback. (...) As he often says, educators must move from knowledge transfer to co-production of learning," the same source says.

John Hattie's research is the basis of the Visible Learning program, which is now implemented in over 10,000 schools worldwide. AGERPRES (RO - author: Roberto Stan, editor: Florin Marin; EN - editor: Simona Klodnischi)
