Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev to open Brasov Philharmonic's 2026-2027 season
Russian conductor and composer Mikhail Pletnev will open the Brasov Philharmonic's 2026-2027 season on Sept. 24 as pianist, performing with the symphony orchestra conducted by David Molard Soriano, the institution's management announced on Friday.
The opening concert will feature Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Rondo in D major, Franz Schubert's monumental Wanderer Fantasy in the version for piano and orchestra by Mikhail Pletnev, and George Enescu's Symphony No. 2 in A major, described by the organisers as 'one of the Romanian composer's most extensive and demanding works.'
According to the Philharmonic, the 2026-2027 season will be one of its most ambitious in recent years, both in terms of guest artists and the scale of its programmes. Guest performers will include conductor Anton Shaburov, violinist Roman Kim, pianist Andrey Gugnin, double bassist Uxia Martinez Botana, accordionist Radu Ratoi, and conductors Sergey Smbatyan, Tiberiu Soare, Steffen Schlandt, Rumon Gamba, Antoine Marguier and Gianluca Marciano.
The symphonic repertoire will include Richard Strauss' Don Quixote, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3, Aram Khachaturian's Symphony No. 2, Strauss' tone poems Death and Transfiguration and Ein Heldenleben, and Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra.
The season will also feature the Brasov premiere of Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3, one of the American composer's landmark orchestral works, as well as Arnold Schoenberg's orchestral arrangement of Johannes Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor.
Alongside its major symphonic concerts, the new season will include film music performances, holiday-themed events, special projects, a new edition of the International Chamber Music Festival and a wide range of educational programmes, the Philharmonic said.
