Alleged Order of Malta diplomatic ID bearing Calin Georgescu's name found - judicial sources
An alleged diplomatic ID bearing the name of Calin Georgescu, apparently issued by the Order of Malta, was found by investigators at his villa in Mogosoaia, judicial sources told AGERPRES.
The alleged ID is headed 'DIPLOMATIC ID' - Order of Malta, Sovereign Order Hospitalliers of Saint John of Jerusalem - and bears the name of 'senator' Calin Georgescu, as well as his photograph.
Investigators suspect the ID card is fake.
Prosecutors also found a jamming device in Calin Georgescu's car, which allowed the former presidential candidate to prevent various conversations from being recorded. The device, known as a rabbler, is used to prevent conversations from being listened to and recorded.
The former candidate is expected to be brought shortly to the headquarters of the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) for questioning.
Businessman Ionel Rusen has also been brought to DIICOT headquarters.
Calin Georgescu was taken into custody on Monday morning and brought to his home in Mogosoaia to be present during searches conducted as part of a fraud investigation involving alleged losses of EUR 1.1 million.
The investigation was launched following a complaint filed by Razvan Leu, a businessman from Buzau, who claims Georgescu defrauded him of EUR 1 million.
Razvan Leu allegedly met Georgescu through a mutual friend, Ion Negoescu, and the former presidential candidate allegedly proposed that he become involved in a precious-metals trading venture.
The business required a line of credit, and Georgescu allegedly recommended that Razvan Leu contact a trusted associate, Ionel Rusen, who in turn introduced him to an Italian citizen, Massimiliano Arena, a representative of a Swiss bank.
In order to obtain the loan, Razvan Leu was then asked to pay a guarantee of EUR 1.1 million, money that allegedly ended up financing Georgescu's presidential campaign.
The loan never materialised, and the Buzau businessman requested the return of the EUR 1 million guarantee, but the money was not returned. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Eusebi Manolache; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
