Iasi mayor: Israeli President to attend Iasi March of Life commemorating 85 years since 1941 Pogrom
Israeli President Isaac Herzog will visit Iasi at the end of June to take part in the March of Life, an event through which local authorities commemorate 85 years since the 1941 Pogrom, Mayor Mihai Chirica announced on Thursday.
According to the municipality official, Iasi will host between June 27 and 29 the 12th edition of the March of Life. The main event will take place on Sunday, June 28, at the Jewish Cemetery in Pacurari and will be marked by the presence of the President of the State of Israel.
'The March of Life is a unique moment in Romania, organised as a form of commemoration but also to counter the extremist movements of June 1941, when tens of thousands of people were killed simply because they were born Jewish. We are organising this event again this year, even if the international context is somewhat unfortunate, but combating extremism, antisemitism and any form of man's fight against man must be done continuously. Unfortunately, we are witnessing extremist movements increasingly often. The date of June 28 also coincides with President Isaac Herzog's visit to Iasi and, on the 29th, to Bucharest. This is a great honour for us,' Mihai Chirica said at a press conference.
