We have reservations technocratic government will produce results (Interim PM Bolojan)
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), declared that at the beginning of next week, most likely on Monday, the PNL leadership will hold consultations with the Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac, emphasizing that he has reservations regarding a technocratic government that would have the necessary results for the country in the coming period.
'I saw this proposal. Mr. Tomac contacted Mr. Dan Motreanu, the Secretary General of the PNL, and very likely on Monday, at the beginning of next week, we will have a discussion with the Prime Minister who was designated to form the government, so that after this discussion we can convene the party's leadership forum and make a decision,' Ilie Bolojan told Euronews Romania on Thursday evening.
Bolojan added that the liberals have 'reservations' about the possibility of a technocratic government being successful.
'I would say that we have reservations about the possibility of a technocratic government achieving results in the coming period. Why are these reservations? On the one hand, it is not enough for a government to be formed by good quality people who are well-meaning. It needs to have unequivocal support in Parliament, because, whether you like it or not, you end up with parliamentary support, or, what will happen, as we have seen in the last 10-11 months. When the Government is put in the situation, and it will not be able to avoid it, to take measures that do not sound good, no one will be next to the Government to support these measures. (...) A political government has a responsibility through the parliamentary groups, it has committed itself to the citizens to some things that it will do, they have a kind of contract with the voters who voted for them, a technocratic government will not have that and considering the 2016 experience, for example, the probability that things will turn out well is quite low. And based on these experiences, I have reservations that it will be a successful government, but that does not mean that we will not treat things responsibly,' Bolojan said.
He added that the PNL would make a decision after seeing what the agenda proposed by the designated prime minister is.
He stressed that the PNL will not support a government in which there will be people proposed by the PSD, at the level of state secretaries or ministers, who, in one way or another, are obviously associated with this party.
'Apart from the things that concern our country, not to deviate from the budgetary targets, because, otherwise, everything that Romanians have endured so far will be canceled and we will return to a more complicated situation, apart from managing things correctly, from doing good governance, we also have an experience that we had during this period with the PSD, during which we completely lost trust in everything that this party does. (...) We cannot vote for a government in which there are state secretaries, for example, designated by the PSD, or ministers who, in one form or another, are obviously associated with this party', declared Bolojan.
The PNL leader also explained that it is not about individuals from among the social democrats, but about the erosion of the basis of trust in the PSD, as a party.
