Defence Minister visits Romanian detachment 'Carpathian Vipers' deployed in Lithuania
A delegation from the Ministry of National Defence of Romania, led by Minister Radu Miruta, is on a working visit on Friday to the Romanian detachment 'Carpathian Vipers', deployed at the Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania.
On the sidelines of the visit, Minister Radu Miruta will hold a bilateral meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart, Robertas Kaunas.
The 'Carpathian Vipers' detachment, consisting of approximately 100 military personnel and six F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft, is deployed in Lithuania at Siauliai Air Base and is providing the Enhanced Air Policing Service from April to July 2026, the ministry said in a press release.
The Romanian Air Force is on its fourth deployment to Lithuania, where it has contributed to safeguarding the integrity of the airspace of the Baltic States and NATO.
The first Air Policing mission was carried out between August and October 2007, with a detachment made up of 67 military personnel and four MiG-21 LanceR aircraft from the 71st Air Base 'General Emanoil Ionescu'. The second and third missions took place between April and July 2023 and April and July 2025 respectively, each involving 100 military personnel and four F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft from the 86th Air Base 'Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociornita'.
