Tourist arrivals in Romania down 6.3%, overnight stays down 8.6% in March

The arrivals and overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation, including apartments and rooms for rent, decreased by 6.3%, respectively by 8.6% in March 2026 compared with the same moth of last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.

In March 2026, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists' reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 779,100 persons, decreasing by 6.3% compared to March 2025.

Of the total number of arrivals in March 2026, Romanian tourists accounted for 78.3% of arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments, while foreign tourists accounted for 21.7%.

In March 2026, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 1.438 million, decreasing by 8.6% compared to March 2025.

Of the total number of overnight stays in March 2026, Romanian tourists accounted for 75.2% of overnight stays at tourist accommodation establishments, while foreign tourists accounted for 24.8%.

According to the INS, the average duration of stay was 1.8 days for Romanian and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.

In March 2026, the net use index of accommodation places was 19.4% on total tourists' accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), decreasing by 3.1 percentage points compared to March 2025.

In the first three months of this year, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists' reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 2.352 million persons, 5.8% less compared to the same period of last year.

Of the total number of arrivals in the mentioned period, Romanian tourists accounted for 80.5% of arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments, while foreign tourists accounted for 19.5%.

In the period 01 January - 31 March 2026, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 4.452 million, 6.7% less compared with the similar period in 2025.

Of the total number of overnight stays in the period mentioned, Romanian tourists accounted for 77.6% of overnight stays at tourist accommodation establishments, while foreign tourists accounted for 22.4%.

In the first three months of this year, the average duration of stay was 1.8 days for Romanian tourists and of 2.2 days for foreign tourists.

The net use index of accommodation places between 1 January and 31 March 2026 was 20.8% on total tourists' accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), 2.5 percentage points less compared with the same period last year.

By county, in the mentioned period, the number of tourists' arrivals in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) recorded higher values in: Bucharest Municipality (413,400 people), Brasov (307,200 people) and Prahova (130,800 people). Tourist overnight stays in the establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) also recorded higher values in the same period in: Bucharest Municipality (853,600), Brasov (598,400) and Prahova (261,100).

By country, the most arrivals of the foreign tourists accommodated in establishments of tourists' reception with functions of tourists' accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in the first three months of 2026 came from: Italy (51,600 persons), Germany (38,500 persons) and United Kingdom (33,800 persons).

The INS mentioned that the sample of accommodation structures was established starting from the list of authorized accommodation structures, downloaded from the website of the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism-Department for Tourism, on January 5, 2026.
