Ambassador Ozgur Kivanc Altan: Turkish people hold Mircea Lucescu in deep respect
Türkiye's ambassador in Bucharest Ozgur Kivanc Altan laid a wreath on Wednesday evening at the catafalque of former national football team manager Mircea Lucescu at the National Arena, saying that the Turkish people 'love and respect' the late coach.
'Mircea Lucescu was a precious man for both Romania and Türkiye, and for the entire football world. The Turkish people love and respect Mr. Lucescu because he contributed to the development of football in our country through his work at Galatasaray, Besiktas and the Turkish national team. He was like a father to all of us. He was not just a football man, but an ambassador of relations between Romania and Türkiye,' the diplomat said.
'We are here to pay our respects on this very sad day. We want to honor the memory of this great coach who always worked with passion. As you saw, at the end of the Türkiye - Romania match, our captain Hakan Çalhanoglu hugged Mircea Lucescu. That was a final embrace on behalf of the entire Turkish people,' Ozgur Kivanc Altan added.
The ambassador was accompanied at the National Arena by around 15 Turkish businesspeople.
Mircea Lucescu's coffin was laid in state on Wednesday at the National Arena, where the public may pay their respects until 9:00 p.m., and again on Thursday between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
