Mirabela Gradinaru - meeting with Romanian doctors in the US at roundtable on treating children's addictions
Mirabela Gradinaru, life partner of President Nicusor Dan, together with State Advisers Ana Maria Geana and Diana Punga and Ambassador Alexandru Muraru organized in Washington D.C. a roundtable with the Romanian doctors in the US specialized in addiction prevention and treatment, as well as child health protection, the Presidential Administration informed.
According to the quoted source, the discussions focused on the doctors' experience in managing the phenomenon of addictions - both substance-related and digital. The participants underscored the importance of prevention, early intervention, multidisciplinary approach and cooperation between health, education and social protection systems, in order to protect children who are in vulnerable situations.
Within the meeting, concrete ways of collaboration between Romania and the US were analysed, as well as exchanges of best practices regarding the prevention and treatment programmes in the US centers, the organization of some observation internships and a mentoring programme for Romanian doctors in multidisciplinary teams in the US, establishing a regular dialogue format among doctors in order to update prevention and treatment methods for children and adolescents in line with the latest developments in research and removing barriers to diploma recognition in order to facilitate knowledge transfer and the return of interested doctors to Romania.
The Romanian doctors in the US expressed their willingness to endorse Romania through their accumulated expertise and contribute to the development of public policies inspired from the American experience. They underscored that, although they have great respect for the professionalism of Romanian doctors, the response to the phenomenon of addictions cannot be exclusively medical. There is a need for education, family involvement, responsibility from digital platforms and public policies oriented toward protection and not just reaction.
The meeting confirmed that preventing addictions among children must be a priority at the intersection between health, education and social policies, and international cooperation can decisively contribute to the development of sustainable solutions in this area, the Presidential Administration mentioned.
