Leaders of Bucharest, Chisinau, Kyiv Parliaments sign Joint Statement on Ukraine
President of the Senate Mircea Abrudean, together with President of the Chamber of Deputies Sorin-Mihai Grindeanu, and their counterparts from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, signed a joint statement marking the fourth anniversary of the Russian Federation's full-scale military invasion of the neighbouring country, launched on 24 February 2022, according to the Senate's website.
According to the quoted source, the Joint Statement by Heads of Parliaments of the States of the 'Odesa Triangle' resolutely condemns the criminal actions of the Russian Federation which, in disregard of universally recognised principles and norms of international law, continues to perpetrate the crime of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The signatories reaffirm their full respect and unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, including its territorial waters, and emphasise Ukraine's inherent right of self-defence in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.
They welcome the consistent and comprehensive support and financial assistance provided to Ukraine by its international partners, including the states of the Group of Seven, the Coalition of the Willing and the European Union.
According to the document, the accession of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the European Union will have strategic significance for the stability, security and development of the region and of Europe as a whole. In this context, the signatories strongly call for the swift removal of artificial obstacles blocking the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union and for the adoption without further delay of the decision to open negotiations on Cluster 1 - Fundamentals for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
The statement highlights the importance of further strengthening sanctions pressure on Russia, particularly against its shadow fleet and other sources of funding for its military aggression. It also underlines that providing the appropriate means to Ukraine to defend itself and repel the aggressor represents a direct contribution to enhancing the security of Europe as a whole.
The three parliamentary leaders call on the international community, national parliaments and governments to maintain unity, decisiveness and consistency in supporting Ukraine until the full restoration of its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, including its territorial waters, as well as in upholding the international order based on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
