Culture Ministry: 16,881 visitors to Romania's stand at Cairo International Book Fair
The Cairo International Book Fair closed its doors to the public, with 16,881 visitors passing through the Romania stand over the course of 13 days, Romania being the guest of honour country at this year's edition of the event.
At the official closing ceremony, Ambassador of Romania to the Arab Republic of Egypt Olivia Toderean and President of the Romanian Cultural Institute Liviu Jicman handed over the guest of honour status to the Ambassador of the State of Qatar, the country that will hold this title in 2027, the Ministry of Culture informed in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.

According to the source, a few figures speak for themselves about the scale and pace of this Romanian cultural presence, a first for Egypt and the Arab world: 16,881 visitors crossed the threshold of the Romania stand; 33 events included in the official cultural programme and six cultural events organised on the sidelines of the fair; 24 book launches and translations into Arabic, 16 of which were produced as premieres especially for this Cairo edition; more than 35 interviews given to the Egyptian and international press by Romanian officials, Romanian writers and the Ambassador of Romania to Egypt; over 5,500 publications and promotional materials distributed to visitors; approximately 205 stakeholders involved from Romania and Egypt over 12 months of preparation; 14 volunteers, students of Arabic studies and Romanians settled in Egypt, an essential part of Romania's team at this historic edition of the Cairo International Book Fair.

The literary programme brought together important Romanian authors: Matei Visniec, Ioana Parvulescu, Denisa Comanescu, Tatiana Tibuleac, Radu Vancu, Bogdan-Alexandru Stanescu, Catalin Pavel, Varujan Vosganian, Peter Sragher, Cosmin Perta, Mihaela Coseescu, Alexandru and Cristina Donovici, George Arion.

The participation also facilitated high-level dialogue between the leaderships of prestigious universities in Romania and Egypt.

A special emphasis was placed on children's literature, through the first volumes by Romanian authors translated into Arabic, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute through the ROMANIAN BOOKS FOR CHILDREN programme.

Held under the slogan 'Books for Friends: From the Danube to the Nile,' Romania's participation in the most important book fair in the Arab world and on the African continent was organised by the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Romania in Cairo, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre for Arab Studies/University of Bucharest, in an anniversary year marking 120 years of bilateral diplomatic relations between Romania and Egypt.
