Romania participating in Belgrade International Book Fair
Romania is participating with a national stand at the Belgrade International Book Fair, held between 25 October and 2 November, one of the most influential publishing events in the region.
'The programme at Romania's stand this year highlights contemporary Romanian literature through the participation of writers Bogdan-Alexandru Stanescu and Ioana Maria Stancescu, who will engage with the Serbian public in book presentations and meetings with readers,' the Ministry of Culture announced on Facebook on Monday.
The activities are designed to encourage direct dialogue with the public and professionals in the book industry, while also promoting the guest authors, partner publishing houses, as well as new Serbian-language translations.
'Romania's participation in the Belgrade Book Fair represents an ongoing cultural dialogue that brings Romanian literature closer to Serbian readers. We are pleased to see growing interest in Romanian authors and new translations,' Alexandru Popescu, the Ministry of Culture's Book Fair Coordinator, is quoted as saying.
Through its presence at the Belgrade International Book Fair, Romania is strengthening its position in the Serbian publishing market, a receptive and open space for Romanian literature, where the number of translations has increased in recent years.
'Serbia is one of the most dynamic markets in the region when it comes to European literature and authors from culturally related areas. In this context, promoting Romanian writers in Belgrade supports the expansion of translations, diversification of the publishing offer and consolidation of Romanian literature's place in the Serbian cultural space,' the ministry added.
Events dedicated to Romanian literature will be moderated and translated by Djura Miocinovic, one of the most active and respected translators of contemporary Romanian literature in Serbia, whose work consistently contributes to promoting Romanian authors in the Serbian cultural sphere.
At the same time, Romania's participation in the fair also reflects the development of bilateral cultural cooperation.
'The Ministry of Culture continues to strengthen partnerships with publishing, academic and cultural institutions in Serbia, in support of translations and literary exchanges. In this regard, we highlight the excellent collaboration with the Department of Romanian Language and Literature within the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade, as well as the support provided by the KROKODIL Association, part of the European CELA - Connecting Emerging Literary Artists programme, thanks to which an excerpt from the novel Silence Comes First by Ioana Maria Stancescu was translated into Serbian by Mirela Glusac, facilitating Serbian readers' access to recent Romanian literature,' the ministry release reads.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Serbia, Romania's presence at the Belgrade Book Fair has shown steady and meaningful development. Since 2015, the Ministry of Culture has participated in this event, helping to build a lasting platform for cultural and publishing dialogue between the two countries. A highlight remains the 2022 edition, when Romania was the Guest of Honour, presenting a complex programme that brought together over 30 guests and events, placing Romanian literature at the centre of attention for both Serbian and international audiences.
