The only viable direction for Romania is the quick formation of a pro-Western government with an ambitious mandate built on substantial reforms, economic performance and real measures of social equity, Social Democrat MEP Victor Negrescu said on Tuesday, urging right-wing political forces to show responsibility and return quickly and maturely to the negotiating table.

'Together with the European Social Democratic family, we call on the right-wing political forces to show responsibility and to return quickly and maturely to the negotiating table. This message has been repeatedly communicated by all pro-European political groups in the European Parliament. The coalition must and can deliver more and better for the people. When an overwhelming majority of citizens are dissatisfied with the economic and social results, it is obvious that things had to change. And that is what happened. No one should cling to power now, because Romania cannot depend on a single man,' Negrescu wrote on Facebook.

He also recalled that, in any coalition, governance must be based on dialogue, respect and shared responsibility. 'And the Social Democratic Party aims to quickly overcome these moments, to forget the attacks it has been subjected to and to build healthy policies for Romanians,' the MEP added.

According to him, the pro-European political forces can jointly commit to a set of clear objectives that would give new meaning to the coalition: the correct, transparent and full spending of all European funds, by assuming all the necessary reforms, and building a strong country mandate for the post-2027 EU budget; restoring a predictable fiscal system, developing mechanisms to relaunch the economy and consumption, and completing all investments; combating tax evasion and social inequities, ensuring proper financing for justice, transposing European legislation, and respecting the law and social rights; advancing major country projects - completing OECD accession this year, preparing a roadmap for joining the euro, and identifying a national flagship project; launching a national reform effort, including a constitutional reform plan to prepare Romania for the years ahead.

'If we focus on these things, we will manage to overcome small and personal stakes. I will actively support the future pro-Western coalition to have an ambitious mandate and deliver concrete results for citizens,' Negrescu said.
