President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday he will begin informal consultations with the political parties to form a new Government, after the motion of censure against the Bolojan cabinet passed Parliament, and assured that a pro-Western Government will be in place at the end of the talks.

He said he rules out the scenario of early elections and underscored that a new Government will be appointed 'within a reasonable timeframe.'

'I will begin with informal consultations and, when options crystallize, we will hold formal consultations. I understand Romanians' expectations regarding how the state functions, and especially corruption. I understand Romanians' expectations related to everyday life and will, of course, take them into account in the talks I will have with parties to form a new Government. We will have a new Government within a reasonable timeframe. I therefore rule out the scenario of early elections and underscore that, at the end of these procedures, we will have a pro-Western Government. We will get through this calmly,' the head of state said in a press statement at the Cotroceni Palace.

He reiterated that Romania is a stable state and called for calm.

'The Government was dismissed today by Parliament. It is not a happy moment in any democracy. However, it is a democratic decision of Parliament. I call for calm. Romania is a stable state, the state institutions are functioning and Romania has a direction it is following. There is consensus among pro-Western parties on the major directions of the country. There is consensus on the pro-Western direction. There is consensus on the OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] accession. There is consensus on the 2026 budget execution, on the 2026 budget target and on the budget targets for the coming years,' the president said.

At the same time, he added that there is also consensus on the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) programmes.

'There is consensus on the next stages of these programmes: 31 May - completion of contracts under the SAFE; 31 May - final adjustments to the PNRR projects; 31 August - completion of the PNRR. And I remind you that, even though the procedures for the motion of censure had already started last week, Parliament voted investments of nine billion in the the SAFE programme, as proof of this consensus,' President Nicusor Dan mentioned.

The motion of censure initiated by MPs from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and PACE - Intai Romania (PEACE - Romania First) against the Government led by Liberal Ilie Bolojan was adopted by Parliament on Tuesday.

A number of 281 votes were cast 'in favour', four 'against' and three were annulled.

The motion of censure, called 'STOP to 'Bolojan Plan' to destroy the economy, impoverish the population and fraudulently sell off state assets,' was signed by 254 MPs. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
