In address on Romanian Army Day, President Dan says peace demands responsible action to deter war
In remarks delivered on Saturday in Iasi, on Romanian Army Day, President Nicusor Dan said that the modernization of the Romanian Army is a priority, pointing out that just claiming you want peace is not enough, but one must act responsibly and prepare to deter war.
'Today we celebrate the Romanian Army, an institution without which sovereignty, independence, national unity, integrity would not be properly protected. Romania is where it is today because some people sacrificed themselves in independence wars for its national reunification; Romania is protected today because it has a set of partners, and it has these partners because in the recent period the troops of the Romanian Army have fought in various theaters of operations. Today we honor those who put their lives on the line on the battlefield, we also honor war veterans. We are going through a complicated geopolitical period, we are going through a period in which we realize that peace is not a given, it's not enough to loudly profess your desire for peace; you must also act responsibly in order to have peace. And this means that one has to prepare, in order to have peace one must prepare to deter war. This is why the modernization of the Romanian Army is a priority at this time and that's why Romania invests in the modernization of its army,' President Nicusor Dan said.
He also specified that Romania will allocate funds for the Army to be prepared.
'We will be smart enough for allocations to also be directed to the national defense industry, to develop this industry and implicitly bring jobs to the national economy,' the head of the state added.
The president also underscored that the Army has committed professionals.
'There's this societal rule, people are always right. The fact that in all opinion polls the institution of the Army is the most appreciated institution in Romania means that the Army has professionalism and reliable professionals,' he said.
President Nicusor Dan participated on Saturday in the military and religious ceremony organized in Iasi by the 15th 'Podu Înalt' Mechanized Brigade on the occasion of the Romanian Army Day. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Marius Septimiu Avram; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
