Voices and harmonies at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa - the first symphonic concert in Roman amphitheater
The Roman amphitheater at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa will host on Sunday, June 14, from 6:00 p.m., a classical music performance by students from the 'Sigismund Toduta' Art High School in Deva, the event being organized by the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization (MCDR).
The moment marks the official reopening of the amphitheater for cultural activities and the return to the public's attention of one of the most valuable monuments of ancient heritage in Romania, the organizers say.
'After almost 2,000 years of history, the space that once hosted performances, ceremonies and public events in the capital of the Roman province of Dacia is once again becoming a meeting place between the community, culture and heritage. It is an extremely important event because we want to show and demonstrate that these cultural monuments also have an active role in the life of the community. They are not restored just to be visited, they are restored to bring added value to the community and to host high-profile events,' the manager of the MCDR Deva, Liliana Tolas, told AGERPRES on Friday.
The artistic program entitled 'Voices and harmonies at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa' includes symphonic and classical canto works, a repertoire of Romanian and international covers and a Balkan pop-rock one.
Public access is free, subject to availability.
The series of cultural events in the Roman amphitheater space at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa will continue this fall, when MCDR Deva aims to organize the first edition of an ancient theater festival.
The amphitheater was reopened to the public in August 2025, after a conservation, restoration and enhancement process that lasted several years. The project was financed from European funds won by the Hunedoara County Council, worth approximately 22 million lei, with a 2% co-financing from the beneficiary.
In order to enhance the value of the historical monument, by organizing thematic performances, specialists have planned to install bleachers for the public, placed in such a way that they do not affect the amphitheater, do not have contact with the walls and can be dismantled, if necessary.
