Nicusor Dan: Eugen Tomac resigned his mandate; I nominate Adrian Vestea as prime minister

Eugen Tomac has resigned his mandate as prime minister-designate, President Nicusor Dan announced on Sunday, adding that he nominated Adrian Vestea in his place.

'Mr. Eugen Tomac resigned his mandate this morning, and under these circumstances I designate Mr. Adrian Vestea as prime minister,' the head of the state said in a press statement delivered at Cotroceni Palace.

He mentioned that Adrian Vestea has gone through 'all the administrative stages', having served as mayor, county council president, and also as a 'successful' Development, Public Works and Administration minister, who secured European funds.

'He is a person focused on development. For example, he developed the Brasov airport, which is a success. He is clearly a pro-Western person, a person with values, a person of dialogue. Not in the last place, he is someone who has worked with budgets for a long time and understands budget responsibility. So I am convinced that he will successfully accomplish this task,' Nicusor Dan said.

The president also thanked Eugen Tomac for the 'seriousness', 'commitment', and 'responsibility' he demonstrated in his efforts to put together a government lineup.

'Neither Mr. Tomac nor I have been toying with governing. We moved in this direction following consultations with political parties. At this moment, however, it is clear that a political solution is the appropriate one. I want to thank all those who were ready to be part of a government - people with solid training who had the courage to set aside their professional path in order to serve the citizens in a Government of Romania, people we understood we could rely on and whom our society needs,' the head of the state underscored.
