Romanian hemp tradition from north-western Romania to be showcased in Rome on Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse

Image

The tradition of Romanian hemp processing will be showcased in Rome on June 17 in an exhibition dedicated to village life in north-western Romania, marking the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse, the Oradea Museum of the Cris Country announced on Friday.

According to a museum press release, the exhibition, entitled 'The Use of Hemp in Village Life in North-Western Romania', aims to highlight the importance traditionally attached to this textile plant, when entire households took part in transforming hemp into cloth and garments.

Visitors will be able to follow, step by step, the journey of the plant, from harvesting and retting to crushing and scutching the stalks, combing the fibres, spinning, winding and washing the threads, and finally warping and weaving the cloth. These activities formed part of the annual cycle of work and the very rhythm of village life.

In addition to the various stages of processing, visitors will be able to admire the finished products - textiles and traditional garments - displayed through the reconstruction of two peasant interiors.

One interior is dedicated to work and features a loom, bench and stove, while the other recreates a festive home with a table, dowry chest, icons and traditional pottery. The setting is completed by towels, tablecloths and mannequins dressed in folk costumes specific to the Cris Country.

The exhibits come from the collections of members of the Friends of the Cris Country Museum Association, while the folk costumes belong to performer Antonela Ferche Butiu. They represent the major ethnographic areas of north-western Romania - Crisul Alb, Crisul Negru, Crisul Repede and Crasna-Barcau.

The exhibition is organised by the Romanian Academy in Rome in cooperation with the Oradea Museum of the Cris Country, the Bihor County Culture Centre and the Friends of the Cris Country Museum Association.

The opening will take place on June 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the Romanian Academy in Rome, located on Viale delle Belle Arti 110.

The exhibition will run from June 17 to 28, offering visitors in the Italian capital the opportunity to rediscover a valuable part of Romania's ethnographic heritage and the crafts that shaped traditional village life for centuries.
