Romania registers significant progress in alignment with OECD standards on environmental policies (ministry)
Romania has made significant progress in alignment with the legal instruments of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regarding environmental policies, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MMAP) announced on Friday, in the context of the recent meeting of the OECD Environment Policy Committee (EPOC).
According to a press release from the MMAP, Romania's delegation at the event was represented by MMAP Secretary General Alexandru Avram, Romania's National Coordinator for the OECD accession process and Secretary of State with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Luca Niculescu, National Environmental Guard Commissioner General Andrei Corlan, along with experts from the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Guard.
'As part of the OECD accession process, Romania has focused on improving the institutional and operational architecture for environmental policies and on further developing a suitable and effective toolkit in the area of environmental protection. Following discussions within the Committee, the conclusion was that we have made consistent progress and will continue implementing improvement measures, which are on the right track and in line with OECD standards,' said MMAP Secretary General Alexandru Avram.
According to the ministry, discussions held with representatives of member states were guided by a report prepared by the OECD Secretariat, which evaluates Romania's legislation, policies and practices in the environmental policy area.
In the interventions made, significant progress was highlighted regarding Romania's alignment with OECD legal instruments on environmental policies, particularly in areas such as the adoption of an integrated regulatory framework for the environmental performance of public authorities and institutions, the National Green Public Procurement Programme, the promotion of renewable energy use for heating in Romania, improved public access to environmental information, the protection and sustainable management of Romania's coastal area, the integration of environmental impact indicators into the National Tourism Development Strategy for the period 2025-2035, as well as the strengthening of the institutional and operational capacity of the National Environmental Guard.
