Souvenir sheet 'Expo Osaka 1970 - 2025' enters circulation on Monday at Romfilatelia headquarters
The stamp issue entitled 'Expo Osaka 1970 - 2025' featuring a First Day Cover was launched on Monday, at the Romfilatelia headquarters in Bucharest.
The event was attended by Romfilatelia CEO Gabriel Bulumac, Japan's Ambassador to Bucharest Takashi Katae, deputy Raluca Turcan, General Director of the Romanian Post Valentin Stefan.
Deputy Raluca Turcan stated that the release of the philatelic sheet 'Expo Osaka 1979 - 2025' symbolically crowns a friendship between two beautiful countries.
The Japanese ambassador, Takashi Katae, stated that Romania's presence at the Osaka 2025 World Expo plays a special role in promoting the relationship and strategic partnership between the two countries.
'The relationship between Japan and Romania reached a higher level in 2023, when then-President Klaus Iohannis visited Japan. In the context of promoting this relationship and the strategic partnership between the two countries, the World Expo in Osaka has played a special role, with Romania present there with its own pavilion. So far, I know the expo has been visited by over 2 million people, and I've heard that in August the number of visitors to Romania's pavilion passed the 500,000 mark and I would like to offer my congratulations for this.
Under the slogan 'Designing Future Society for Our Lives', we are reflecting on what we can do for a sustainable society and 2030 is the target year for the sustainable development goals, and we know that Romania is actively involved in this project, and we thank you for that,' Japan's Ambassador told AGERPRES.
The Ambassador mentioned that this event, organized 55 years after the release of the 1970 stamp sheet, 'also reflects over 50 years of history and friendship,' and appreciated the fact that the stamp launched on Monday 'uses as its theme elements from the 1970 stamp.'
Romfilatelia CEO Gabriel Bulumac spoke about the history of the 1970 sheet's release as well as how it came to be reprinted with the insignia of the Osaka 2025 World Expo.
Gabriel Bulumac noted that 'the first and only stamp printed in Japan is now being given new value. (...) We are among the few countries that can take pride in such a thing.'
He added that the 1970 stamp had a face value of 5 Lei. 'We canceled the 5 Lei it was originally stamped with and added 55 Lei, the new value.'
He explained that 'the pagoda on the stamp accompanying the sheet is not the same, it is a stylization created by a Romanian artist, a great engraver, Ion Dumitrana. The stamp is shown from the front, while the sheet is slightly from the side. We are among the few countries that can pride themselves on something like this.'
The souvenir sheet of the issue, printed in Japan in a run of 350,000 copies with computerized numbering, was brought to Romania in November 1970 and put into circulation on December 1st of the same year.
The souvenir sheet of the issue entitled 'Expo Osaka 1970 - 2025' has an overprint with the face value of Lei 55 printed on the postage stamp, a perforated star shape (as a safety element) and elements of a thematic drawing made by the well-known designer and painter Mircea Cantor.
The First Day Cover reproduces a stylized drawing of the Romanian Exhibition Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025, having the postage stamp of the overprinted souvenir sheet and the bicolored First Day postmark, symbolizing the flag of Japan.
