Constanta drone explosion/Ukraine says Navy drone was jammed; cooperation with Romania prevented casualties
The maritime drone that exploded Friday in the Civil Port of Constanta was a Ukrainian device that went out of control after being jammed by Russian electronic-warfare systems, the Ukrainian Navy said, as cited by Reuters and AFP.
As a result of the jamming, the drone veered off course and drifted toward the Romanian coast, the Navy added in the same statement on Facebook.
The Ukrainian Navy informed its Romanian counterpart 'in a timely manner' that 'a maritime drone had gone out of control due to Russian interference', Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said on Friday, EFE reports.
According to him, relevant authorities in both countries 'have been in close touch since then, took control of the situation, and made sure the area was safe. Such effective coordination allowed to take necessary measures to prevent harm to civilians,' Tykhyi said in a message on X.
The Ukrainian official concluded that the incident shows that Russian aggression against Ukraine 'poses a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the entire region.'
Romania's acting Defence Minister Radu Miruta too said on Friday that the Ukrainian authorities had informed the Romanian side they had lost control of four marine drones, and that the one located in the Civil Port of Constanta was expected to explode.
'Around 10 a.m., the Ukrainian authorities notified their Romanian counterparts that they had lost control of four drones and that the one in the Civil Port of Constanta would explode within short. This allowed us, 10 - 15 minutes in advance, to pull back the teams in the area to prevent greater damage and, above all, to protect the lives of personnel from several agencies who had reached the site and were examining the device,' the defence minister said.
