'We are concerned about the unacceptable violation of the airspace of our Ally and Strategic Partner Poland. We reaffirm our full solidarity with Poland and support close coordination among Allies to adopt appropriate measures. These violations are becoming a pattern for Russia's disregard of sovereignty and international law,' Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu wrote on X.
The continuation of the Russian attacks in the immediate proximity of NATO and repeated violations of the airspace of allies are 'worrisome and irresponsible,' Toiu points out.
'Over a century ago, in 1921, Romania and Poland underwrote Europe's first modern military defence agreement. A lot has changed since. What didn't is the understanding of threats in our region. We will work together and with Allies to secure our skies and ensure our sovereignty,' the Foreign Minister's message also reads.
Poland mobilised its own air defence systems and those of NATO on Wednesday to down drones in its airspace, following a Russian airstrike on Ukraine.
After 'repeated violations' of Polish airspace during a Russian attack on neighbouring western Ukraine on Wednesday, the Polish military announced the deployment of both Polish and allied aircraft.
'The aircraft used their weapons against hostile objects,' said Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz in a message on X platform, adding that he is 'in constant contact with NATO command.' The senior Polish official also urged the population to 'remain calm and share only official announcements from the army and state authorities.'
