The Staatskapelle Dresden, conducted by Daniele Gatti, will perform at the Palace Hall on Wednesday starting at 20:00, as part of the 'George Enescu' International Festival, according to the event's official website.

The programme includes Requiem for String Orchestra by Toru Takemitsu and Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor by Gustav Mahler.

With a venerable history dating back to 1548, when it was founded by Moritz, Elector of Saxony, the Staatskapelle Dresden stands out as one of the oldest orchestras in the world, its destiny closely intertwined with the city of Dresden, the splendour of the Saxon royal court, and the vibrancy of its theatre scene. Maintaining its reputation, the Staatskapelle Dresden performs around 250 opera and ballet productions each year on the stage of the Semperoper, complemented by a diverse array of approximately 50 symphonic concerts, morning performances and intimate chamber music evenings.

Daniele Gatti assumed the role of principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden in August 2024, for a six-year term, thus beginning a new chapter in a long-standing collaboration. (...) Through Gatti's mastery of the Staatskapelle's core repertoire, his visionary interpretations, and his keen sense of sound and the ensemble's unique traditions, the audience has been treated to outstanding concert experiences. During his first season, he also launched the orchestra's first complete cycle of Gustav Mahler's symphonic works.

In addition to his post in Dresden, Daniele Gatti is also the principal conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, music director of the Mozart Orchestra, and, since 2016, artistic adviser of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

* At the Romanian Athenaeum, for the second evening in a row starting at 17:00, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of Flanders), conducted this time by Gabriel Bebeselea, will perform. Soloist: pianist Daniel Ciobanu.

The programme features works by August de Boeck - Dahomey Rhapsody, Isaac Albéniz - Spanish Rhapsody Op. 70 (arranged for piano and orchestra by George Enescu), George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue, Arturo Márquez - Danzón No. 2, and Leonard Bernstein - Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

The Radio Romania Big Band, conducted by Simona Strungaru, will perform at Control Club on Wednesday as of 22:00.

Joining the ensemble are Stefano Di Battista (alto saxophone, soprano saxophone) and Sebastian Burneci (trumpet, flugelhorn).

The programme will include works by:

- George Enescu: Au Soir, a poem for four trumpets; Toccata from the Suite for Piano in D major, Op. 10 (arranged for Big Band by Simona Strungaru, p.a.a.); Pavane from the Suite for Piano in D major, Op. 10 (arranged for Big Band by Sebastian Burneci); fragments from the Chamber Symphony in E major, Op. 33 (arranged for Big Band by Sebastian Burneci); Legend for Trumpet and Piano (arranged for Big Band and trumpet by Simona Strungaru); and additional fragments from the Chamber Symphony in E major, Op. 33 (arranged by Sebastian Burneci);

- Stefano Di Battista: Coco (arranged for Big Band by Mario Corvini), Anastasia (arranged by Simona Strungaru), and Rita (arranged by Mario Corvini);

- Charlie Parker: Bird Feathers (arranged for Big Band by Mario Corvini) and Billie's Bounce (arranged by Peter Herbolzheimer);

- Ennio Morricone: Flora and Deborah's Dream (both arranged for Big Band by Simona Strungaru);

- Jaco Pastorius: Chicken (arranged by Mario Corvini);

- Sebastian Burneci: Behind Social Bars (arranged by Tobias Hoffmann);

- Nino Rota: La Dolce Vita.

The 27th edition of the 'George Enescu' International Festival is taking place in Bucharest and across the country until 21 September. This year, the festival is themed 'Celebrations,' marking 70 years since the death of the great composer.
