Former world No. 1 in women's tennis Simona Halep will appear in a show match with Andrei Pavel as her partner in Iasi on July 9, on the occasion of the upcoming ATP and WTA tournaments to be held here, mayor Mihai Chirica announced on Wednesday.

'In addition to the strong line-up of the Concord Iasi Open, the value of the tournament is also given by the events scheduled during the week. Thus, the most anticipated moment will be the exhibition match Simona Halep will play on July 9 in the company of Andrei Pavel,' Chirica said.

The ATP Challenger 100 Concord Iasi Open powered by MET, now in its sixth edition, will take place between July 6 and 13, and the WTA 250 UniCredit Iasi Open, now in its fourth year, will unfold between July 14 and 20.

The men's tournament will see all five champions of the previous editions take the start. These are Spaniard Carlos Taberner (champion in 2020, ATP's 130th ranked player), Czech Zdenek Kolar (2021, ATP No. 463), Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves (2022, ATP No. 148), Frenchman Hugo Gaston (2023, ATP No. 87) and Bolivian Hugo Dellien (2024, ATP No. 81). Only Zdenek Kolar will play in the qualifiers, the other four being accepted directly into the main draw.

Stepping on court at the UniCredit Iasi Open will be the Romanian players who are currently in the world rankings, specifically Jaqueline Cristian, at this moment one of the world's best-ranked Romanian players; Ana Bogdan, double winner of the women's tournament in Iasi; Irina Begu, multiple WTA champion in both singles and doubles events; Anca Todoni, who is part of the new wave of up-and-coming players; Sorana Cirstea, who participates for the first time in the Iasi tournament; Mihaela Buzarnescu, who is returning after a quite lengthy break from tennis.

Two concerts are scheduled as additional attractions for the audiences to the Ciric Sports Base: The Urs will perform on July 8, and on July 12, pop-rock band Directia 5 will take the stage. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Cristian Lupascu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
